Maintenance frequency
First, did you know that you need to maintain dryer ducts, range hoods and vents? Don’t worry; a lot of people didn’t know that. However, most know that the small filter inside the dryer should be emptied and cleaned, as it collects dust and residue from clothes. Although this is a good habit, unfortunately, it is not enough. Thus, in addition to cleaning the small filter of your dryer and the grilles of your range hood, it is essential to ensure regular maintenance of the ducts of these systems. In addition, it is strongly recommended to clean them every 3 years. This suggested cleaning frequency is based on an average calculated from data collected by specialists who have performed several cleanings. This frequency is therefore largely appropriate, but an expert may adapt this recommendation to your situation. Depending on how many devices, you have, how often you use them or how you use them, the experts will give you personalized advice.
Why have these ducts been cleaned?
Dryer ducts
Neglecting the maintenance of dryer ducts can have serious consequences. Make sure you’re dealing with a good dryer duct cleaner. Every year there are many fires (dryer fires) in homes due to dryer hoses clogged with clothing fibers. Lint buildup in the dryer duct causes the dryer to overheat and trip the thermal safety fuse. If the duct is not cleaned regularly, lint will accumulate and the thermal fuse could be damaged, which could cause a fire in the dryer.
Every year, more than 15,000 home fires are caused by an uncleaned dryer duct. This is why some insurance companies require regular cleaning.
Also, when your dryer’s exhaust is not maintained, your appliance’s performance is reduced, since the air does not properly evacuate its humidity. Therefore, cleaning this duct is essential.
Kitchen hood
Range hood systems contain hazards invisible to the naked eye. When the kitchen is in operation, smoke, heat and grease-laden vapors are vented through the hood’s exhaust system. They enter the filters of your hood and the ducts that pass through your building. Eventually, they go up to the exhaust fan in the ceiling. If this system is not properly maintained, the accumulation of dirt can more easily cause a fire. After cleaning, a flickering hood in the kitchen does not mean that hard-to-reach places have been properly cleaned.
Evacuators
Exhaust vents should also be cleaned for the same safety reasons as dryer ducts or range hoods. While it doesn’t necessarily collect clothing fibers or smoke, steam and dust do take refuge in your duct. Therefore, negligence in maintenance can be detrimental to health. In addition, landfills can quickly fail or cease to perform their primary function if not properly maintained.
