How to choose the right air conditioner 101

During hot seasons, the optimal air conditioner lowers the temperature inside the house, eliminates ambient humidity and filters the air in a room. Some use it to cool certain rooms in the house and avoid the high costs of a central air conditioning system. Make the right decision based on your needs with these tips.

The main models of auxiliary air conditioners

Auxiliary air conditioners are available in 4 models. And no matter which one you choose, each is designed to provide additional cooling during the hot season.

What elements should be taken into account in an air conditioner?

When choosing an air conditioner, several factors must be taken into account. First of all, it is necessary to take into account the surface of the house to be heated and the place where it will be installed. In addition, one must consider the controls of the machine as well as its energy efficiency rating, a very important factor when choosing an air conditioner. It is also important to check the energy efficiency (CEER or SEER) of the appliance .

What does CEER stand for in an air conditioner?

In short, the higher the CEER or SEER, the more efficient the device will be .

The EER ( energy efficiency ratio) only calculates the electrical consumption of the device in operation while the CEER ( combined energy efficiency ratio) takes into account power consumption in on, standby and off mode.

The CEER represents on average 65% of the EER efficiency which is very often manipulated by manufacturers and is indicated when there is no presence of CEER.

What does the Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) represent?

Space-saving air conditioners receive an EER performance rating ( Energy Efficiency Ratio), or an energy efficiency rating, indicated on the machine. This EER is obtained by dividing the cooling capacity by the electrical energy required to operate the device. The EER index is generally between 8 and 12. The higher the EER index of an air conditioner, the energy efficiency will be higher accordingly. The lower the electricity bill, the less greenhouse gases it will emit.

• Appliances with a capacity of 15,000 BTUs usually have a rating of 9 or 10.

• Appliances with an EER rating greater than 10 are considered extremely energy efficient.

Although they offer better EER performance, these more efficient devices are also very expensive. However, it is possible to see a reduction in the operating costs of this category of devices if they are used for a long period of time. The price of a more expensive air conditioner can be offset by lower energy bills.

In fact, purchasing space air conditioners for bedrooms can reduce the cost of running a central air conditioner at night.

Also, keeping the house cool during the day allows the air conditioner to work more efficiently, since it won’t have to run any longer to lower the room temperature by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius all at once. During the day, materials and furniture heat up and give off heat at night. This heat release causes the air conditioner to work harder if it has not been set to low intensity during the day.

Important: keep in mind that the Energy Star rating indicated on the machines helps to choose an eco-efficient model. According to Hydro-Québec, an ENERGY STAR certified central air conditioner can consume an average of 8% less energy compared to a conventional model, while an ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioner consumes an average of 10% less energy than a classic.
