What is Energy Star certification ?
ENERGY STAR® is an internationally recognized mark that certifies the eco-efficiency of industrial facilities, products, homes and buildings. The ENERGY STAR and PORTFOLIO MANAGER names and the ENERGY STAR symbol are Canadian registered marks of the United States Environmental Protection Agency , administered and promoted by Natural Resources Canada. Therefore, the Government of Canada advocates the purchase of these certifies products in order to reduce the energy consumption of appliances, as well as their ecological footprint. All the products with the certification label are tested to rigorous energy efficiency specifications.
The advantages of an Energy star appliance
An energy efficient device
An ENERGY STAR qualified heat pump water heater uses up to 50% less energy, on average, than a conventional electric water heater. Using less energy saves money and reduces your carbon footprint.
What does it mean ?
In fact, the decline in energy consumption is directly related to electricity costs. Therefore, your electricity bills will be reduced by a significant amount depending on your terms. Additionally, according to the Government of Canada, Energy Star heat pumps “are among the 15-30% most energy efficient products in their class” (Government of Canada, 2019).
In addition, this reduction in energy consumption allows you to be even more eco-responsible than with another non-certified heat pump. This choice is more ecological and therefore allows you to reduce your ecological footprint. In addition, in 2019, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from Energy Star products is equivalent to that which would have been generated by taking 100,000 cars off the road ( Energy Star, 2019).
How is it possible?
Heat pump water heater technology does not produce heat directly. Rather, it displaces heat. Heat is taken from the air in the basement or laundry room (or sometimes outside) and transferred to the water tank. Consequently, the heat from the interior is expelled and replaced by cold air. This technology is considered more eco-responsible. In short, the heat pump works on the principle of transferring the heat contained in the air, either from outside to inside in winter, or from inside to outside in summer.
An assured level of quality
This certification also guarantees a certain level of quality assurance that exceeds even that of other conventional heat pumps, without compromising performance. This sought-after level of quality is also approved by the Government of Canada. Therefore, you will be sure to get a product with the energy consumption as declared. All certified products are tested to rigorous efficiency standards and certified by an independent body.
Finally, be sure to look for the little blue label when buying a new heat pump. This will reduce your research efforts and ensure you have a quality product in your hands.
